SIR CLIVE WOODWARD pays tribute to his 1980 Grand Slam winning wonders

I have never really thought about the 1980 Grand Slam – you go fast in life and sport – and it surprised me that the fortieth birthday is imminent.

That campaign taught me just about every rugby lesson there is to learn and played an important role in England's World Cup success 23 years later.

I saw the vital importance in all of the winning teams of having an impressive, combative, streetwise set of forwards. That was followed closely by the need for a world-class kicker, in our case Dusty Hare, who saw us at home against Wales, while we probably deserved to lose. Find a way to get the job done.

Sir Clive Woodward was on the team when England won the Five Nations Grand Slam in 1980 "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> <noscript> <noscript> <img id= Sir Clive Woodward was on the team when England in 1980 the Five Nations Grand Slam won

<p> <noscript> <noscript> <noscript> <noscript> <noscript> <img id= He believes that the English team throughout history has moved to another team from England taps.

There was the disappointment that you were not selected for the opening game against Ireland. But then I realized how quickly things could change when the hapless Tony Bond broke a leg in that Irish game and suddenly it was my turn. Rugby gives and takes and you should be ready to take your chance. Finally, if you play fast with world class players from all stages, no one can stop you.

Just going back down the memory lane this week has made it clear to me that Fran Cotton – who was such an important figure and so supportive behind the scenes as President of Club England when I coached the national team – and I provided a direct link between the 2003 World Cup team and the 1980 class.

We knew what the English rugby greatness looked like, we were lucky enough to participate and, most importantly, we knew from experience exactly what was needed and what sacrifices were needed.

England defeated France 17-13, Ireland 24-9, Wales 9-8 and Scotland 30-18 on the way to glory "class =" blkBorder img-share "/ > </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= England defeated France 17-13, Ireland 24-9, Wales 9-8 and Scotland 30-18 on their way to glory

We both became businessmen and took the business approach to that England adopted in 1980, and Fran had already proved an incredibly successful Lions manager when he asked me to coach England. We sang from the same song of praise.

On a personal level, I also learned that you should enjoy the good times because they can be fleeting. My first four caps for England were those four victorious Grand Slam games and I never played better for England than in that last game at Murrayfield.

That 1980 season, 23 years old, was as good as possible for me as a Test rugby player, but everyone is different and I often thought about that when I became a coach in England. The side I coached had tough times – the "Tour from Hell" in 1998 and our elimination from the 1999 FIFA World Cup – but I knew you still have to believe your moment is coming.

Dusty Hare demonstrated the need for a world-class kicker during the tournament "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Dusty Hare demonstrated the need for a world class kicker during the tournament

Nothing is forever in sport, success or failure. Just be ready when it's your time. In 1980 I thought it was all ridiculously simple and in the dressing room at Murrayfield, as we celebrated after the last game, I looked around at incredible players like Roger Uttley, Fran, Tony Neary, Bill Beaumont and Peter Wheeler and just couldn't & # 39; t believe that England has not won countless championships and slams.

Here was me, a Grand Slam winner after four tests, and some of these legends had been working on it for countless steps over most of a decade and

That's why I have little sympathy for modern players when they start complaining about workloads, too many games and the stress of it all. Try to be a top player – but amateur – in the 1980s. I'd like to bring a few back 40 years for a taste.

Throughout the 1980s, like many English players, Slam I worked full-time. Every Monday at 8am I had to be at the Xerox offices with my detailed weekly forecasts and sales schedules. I also wanted to excel in my work.

At 6pm I had to be in Stourbridge on most Mondays for a full two-hour workout in England. The pace of life was relentless, but I loved every minute of it.

We played and trained for our clubs between tests and during International Week I had to work on Thursday morning before heading to London for an afternoon of training session.

There were six former, current and future English captains in the pack during the tournament "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> <noscript> [1945900036] ] There were six past, current and future English captains in the pack during the tournament "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </noscript> </div>
<p class= There were six former, current and prospective English captains in the peloton during the tournament

On our side we had lawyers, farmers, teachers, insurance brokers, bookbinders and fruit traders. For most of us, there were not enough hours in the day.

As for rugby, that side of 1980 is compared to any England team in history. If there had been a World Cup in 1980, we would have won it.

That platoon was the only thing that spawned the game that season and although rugby players can only really be judged in terms of the era they played in, I have no doubt that the superstars of our 1980s superstars would be in modern rugby.

My coaching adage was always that you needed five or six of the best players in the world in their position to be the best, and the class of 1980 passed that test. At the beginning of the campaign, Mike Slemen, Fran, & # 39; Wheelbrace & # 39 ;, Roger and Nearo were world class and by the end Beaumont was able to be added to that list.

They were also a team of leaders and decision makers. There were six former, current and future English captains in the pack and Paul Dodge and Steve Smith in the back. An extraordinary stat but what an extraordinary couple.

1980: MATCH BY MATCH

England 24-9 Ireland

Substitutions at that time had to take place in the West. Stand up. When Tony Bond went down with a clearly broken leg, I knew I was on it, but I didn't know the way down. I didn't know Twickenham and I couldn't find the elevator. When I found it, it seemed in slow motion. When we were downstairs I tried to run to the tunnel and take off my tracksuit at the same time. Then suddenly I was in the middle of Twickenham, about to play for 70,000 fans. I had never dreamed of making my debut in England.

France 13-17 England

France had a relentless platoon, but we bragged with an average set of attackers also led by Bill Beaumont – and only for one season we had them all on the field. There was a bit of nonsense in an early scrum with Richard Paparemborde trying all sorts of – and not legal – things against Fran Cotton. Suddenly "Paper" fell to the floor and Franny helped him up with a kick to his chest. He would have been banned for six months today. The gigantic gag looked up in shock; France was upset.

I stood there with my mouth open. This was indeed a long way from the student rugby I had played for Loughborough less than a year earlier.

England 9-8 Wales [194590003] [match]although I did not get involved with the nausea. My first memory was personal. Although English, I was educated in North Wales and tried out a few times for Wales Schools on half flight. in the opposition.

So even in this big game, there was still that schoolboy rivalry in the back of my mind. And second, I just knew that Dusty Hare would gamble that last and very awkward penalty out of the mud to win the match. It remains one of the best push kicks I've seen.

Scotland 18-30 England

It was tense. We had waited a month since the & # 39; Battle of Twickenham & # 39; with Wales and the RFU slipped a letter under our hotel room doors on Friday evening and warned against a repeat of such atrocities.

The plan was simple: Monster Scotland in front with our pack, kick well, dominate territorially, press hard and Dusty would kick the targets.

But the adrenaline rushed and we backs started running from all over the place. We turned 19-0 and a smoking Cotton was the last to join us. "What happened to our goddamn game plan?" Complained Fran. Priceless.

The Welshman's goal won a convincing victory for United – their biggest against Chelsea since 1965.

Anthony Martial bundled from almost to double United's lead at an important moment in the match before Rashford placed the game out of Chelsea's reach with his second just minutes later, when the hosts grabbed a quickfire double.

James came off the bench to complete the scoring after a number of powerful running actions by Paul Pogba.

Solskjaer added to the last whistle: & As we said to the boys before the game, we have found the way we want to play and the way we believe. You just have to go out and do the same, "said Solskjaer, who put his faith in youth this summer.

" We've taken risks, but that's the way here. You have to go for it. It is risk and reward and today we were rewarded. & # 39;
