Defi Du Seuil beats rival Un De Sceaux to claim his seventh grade one success at Ascot

Impressive Defi Du Seuil beats rival Un De Sceaux to claim his seventh grade one success on Ascot

Defi Du Seuil strengthened his case for walking in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March with a decisive victory of Un De Sceaux in the Matchbook Clarence House Chase over Ascot.

The seven-year-old, trained by Philip Hobbs, had been hanged by a head in defeating Un De Sceaux in the Tingle Creek Chase in Sandown last month, but his profit margin on Saturday was two and three-quarters of lengths to impress between the last two gates.

Defi Du Seuil is 2-1 favorite for the two-mile Champion Chase. He also has a submission for the longer Ryanair Chase, but it's hard to see him running in that race, especially with two of his main rivals – double champion Chase winner Altior and Chacun Pour Soi – both have something to prove this season .

Hobbs, who won the 2002 Champion Chase with Flagship Uberalles, said: "We hoped he would win again, but I didn't think he would win so easily." Maybe he could have done it at a faster pace, but he traveled and jumped well.

"It was not intended to be at the front, but he had no option. I suppose with the pace he showed there, the Champion Chase is a bit more likely. & # 39;

Defi Du Seuil, owned by JP McManus, has now won seven Grade One races, with two of them – last season's Triumph Hurdle and JLT Novices & # 39; Chase – at the Cheltenham Festival.

Jockey Barry Geraghty said: & # 39; It was not intended to be there so early [in front] but he absolutely flew with it and landed running and he left. Philip thought he had really improved since Sandown – and he felt a better horse in Sandown than last season. He felt really sharp today – he hung on the penultimate spring and put him to bed.

Veteran Un De Sceaux, now 12 years old and with 10 Grade Ones in the bag, including three wins in the Clarence House Chase received an appreciative applause from the Ascot crowd.

With the experimental garden in his favor, he was sent out from 11-10 joint favorite, and trainer Willie Mullins said: The winner has improved over his last run and we have not done that. I was disappointed. [Jockey] Paul Townend said he did not fire. "

The pair was only separated by a neck in Sandown but winner Defi Du Seuil, who also won the Shloer Chase in Cheltenham in November, is 4-6 favorite with Coral despite the fact that Un van Sceaux offers for a fourth victory in the race.

Last year's winner was withdrawn by trainer Nicky Henderson, who has Janika among the five entries for the race. Henderson has consistently warned that he would probably avoid the test site on the Berkshire course with Altior, who also missed last weekend's Silviniaco Conti Chase in Kempton.
