2020 OLYMPIC GAMES

The 2020 Olympics have been postponed to 2021 on March 24 – one of the last major sporting events this summer to fall victim to the corona virus.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a pivotal conference call with the chief of the Olympics, Thomas Bach, on Tuesday to formally decide a plan and they chose to postpone for 12 months.

The decision also means that the Tokyo Paralympic Games will be delayed for a year.

Despite the delay, the name of the delayed Games will still be Tokyo 2020, city governor Yuriko Koike revealed.

A joint statement by the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee stated: & # 39; In the current circumstances and based on the information provided by WHO today, the IOC President and the Prim the Japanese minister has concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo should be postponed to a date after 2020 but no later than summer 2021, to protect the health of athletes, everyone involved in the Olympics and the international community .

& # 39; Leaders agreed that the Tokyo Olympics could be a beacon of hope for the world during these difficult times and that the Olympic flame could light at the end of the tunnel the world is in right now.

& # 39; Therefore, it was agreed that the Olympic flame will remain in Japan. It has also been agreed that the Games will retain the name Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. & # 39;

There was a lot of skepticism that the Olympics would go ahead and continue as planned, while events related to the games were called off. The Olympic torch relay in Greece was canceled on Friday, March 13 – just a day after the flame was lit in Olympia.

The Olympic flame is still being handed over to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on Thursday March 19, but without fans.

Athletes were told to continue training, but many had difficulty considering the government's final measures.

On Friday, March 13, US President Donald Trump's proposal to postpone the Tokyo Olympics for a year due to the corona virus was immediately shot down by the Japanese Olympic minister.

& # 39; The IOC and the Organizing Committee are not considering cancellation or postponement – absolutely not & # 39; said Seiko Hashimoto, an Olympic bronze medalist, at a news conference in Tokyo.

On Tuesday, March 17, Kozo Tashima, one of the vice presidents of the Japanese Olympic Committee and president of the Japanese Football Association, tested positive for coronavirus.

The International Olympic Committee and the organizers of Tokyo have been kept informed since the viral outbreak in China three months ago across Asia and around the world: matches will open as scheduled on July 24 .

The organizers of Tokyo 2020 received the Olympic flame during a scaled-down transfer ceremony in the Greek capital on March 19.

I’ve been mucking around in the garden! Bumble knee deep in manure as he fills his time

I have fattened around in the garden! Bumble knee deep in ripe manure as he fills his time during the closure of the coronavirus

  • He has been busy in the garden applying the best manure from Tricky Dickie
  • Sky Sports commentator should have covered England in Sri Lanka
  • Dom Bess was the man of the match, as England came on top are in Virtual First Test
  • Symptoms of Coronavirus : What Are They and Should You Consult a Doctor?

It's all pretty surreal now, isn't it? ? Things have certainly evolved quickly since the last time we spoke and I hope everyone stays good and does the right thing.

What have I done? Well, gardening has come very much to the fore and my wife, Vipers, is an avid viewer of the QVC television channel where Tricky Dickie Jackson is their gardener expert.

Dickie's latest special offer is super manure – and I can confirm it's really good. So to get my exercise, I turned the yard around and applied the best of Tricky Dickie. It has a pretty pungent smell that Dickie says resembles dark chocolate, but I can't say that Cadbury & # 39; s Bournville came to mind when I smelled it!

Bumble has been working in the garden this week and applying Tricky Dickie's best fertilizer "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Bumble is busy in the garden this week busy applying Tricky Dickie's best manure

I also came out for a round of golf and was just starting my game when my club, Bramall Park, had to close. Our group was ultra sensitive. Nobody touched anyone else's, there was no flag in the hole we could touch and we kept a long distance from each other. I was also not allowed in the clubhouse because I am over 70 – and that was fine.

At times like this, we all need a little community spirit. Our friends Phil and Shelley were great at handing over our supplies. And my buddy Matt from Fleetwood was an absolute gem in delivering delicious fresh fish straight from the boat.

Matt sells his products from a mobile van around Cheshire and he was dropped at our house at 6am Wednesday. It is people like him and his one-man company from Ocean Wave that keep you going during this time.

The Sky Sports commentator should have been in Sri Lanka this week for the first Test "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> <noscript> <img id= Sky Sports commentator had this week in Sri Lanka should be for the first test

We still need to have a little fun, dear reader, and there has been plenty on social media to chuckle at me. What about that boy who decided to have a net in his house? He was dressed in only his underpants and all his cricket gear and when he took a quick single it became clear that he was drenching his kitchen floor so he could slip into his ground!

I couldn't resist giving him my referee's judgment by raising my finger because he didn't keep his bat on the ground and I pointed out that he was running in the middle of the field, so that's five penalties for the opponent. And he had way too much advertising on his pants, in violation of ICC regulations, so that's a bummer! He has to be careful not to pull it out, or he could be out of the series!

Of course I should have been in Sri Lanka this week, so I was grateful to Sky statistician Benedict Bermange for setting up a virtual first test in Galle instead. And it was England's victory on the last day with Dom Bess man of the match. I'm now looking forward to the second virtual test in Colombo to see if our boys can win the series!

Dom Bess was named man of the race when England came out on top in a virtual first test in Galle "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Dom Bess was named man of the game when England came out on top in a virtual first test in Galle

Don't miss the fantastic messages from Jack Brooks of Somerset, a great county track character and a great boy, who ran a quiz on Twitter where you have to guess the cricketer based on clues he gave. Really smart things. Bring them on, Jack.

I better go back to my garden and then I and Vipers have lined up a few games for tonight. Snakes and ladders is a timeless classic. I don't care how old you are, give it a try.

And I'm eagerly awaiting an online delivery of Totopoly, a horse racing board game where, believe it or not, you can bet! That's my racing solution sorted.

So keep yourself busy, do what the experts tell you to do and don't forget your social distance or, as we call it Sky, a Nasser Hussain.

Until next time …

Euros delay may be ideal for England… Southgate’s starlets could peak at the perfect time

Gareth Southgate spent three and a half years responsible for the English team .

He was confronted with the consequences of the Sam Allardyce affair, a Euro 2020 qualifying campaign full of incidents of racism and, more surprisingly, a canteen fight between two players – Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez.

In the midst of all that, Southgate took England to the breadth of a last World Cup. How long ago that suddenly seems.

Gareth Southgate changed England in his three and a half years in the managerial role "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> <noscript> <img id= Gareth Southgate has transformed England into his three-and-one – half a year in the manager role

He has a depth of talent that is not awarded to his predecessors and they will only get better "class =" blkBorder img- share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= He has a talent depth that is not assigned to his predecessors and they will only bet there are

It's fair to say that Southgate's last challenge was never on him is radar. The 49-year-old is a strategist, but some things you can't plan for, and such a thing is delaying a big tournament for 12 months.

Like the rest of us, Southgate would now give its all to know that the European Championship now scheduled for next summer will actually take place.

That would be a clear sign that Europe and the world had left the coronavirus epidemic behind. However, he is a footballer and will still think football thoughts. With that in mind, it's hard not to wonder what his team will look like next year.

Here's how Ian Ladyman wants England to start the European Championship next year "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= This is how Ian Ladyman wants England to start the European Championship next year

England could have made the final phase of the tournament in June. Playing their group games in Wembley would have produced something of a comfortable blanket.

England remains strong at home, now supported by an audience buying their tickets and turning on their televisions with a little more hope and affection.

Nevertheless, the tournament – speculation that had begun to crop up in far too many conversations this season – would have likely turned out out there.

The Southgate team has promises, but they also have holes. The opposition from the best in Europe would have been slightly stronger than many of the teams England beat in their run to the last four of the World Cup two summers ago.

This is not meant to sound unkind, but England largely defeated teams they would expect to beat in Russia, then lost to the first good they encountered – Croatia. They will have a tougher schedule in the euros.

So maybe the next 12 months will offer Southgate opportunities whether he wanted to or not.

His team, his team, is a young one. His oldest player is Jordan Henderson and he is only 29. So he will not lose any players over time in the next 12 months. Conversely, he should see many of them improve and mature.

Young players like Jadon Sancho will get another year of experience for the euro in 2021 "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> <noscript> <img id= Young players like Jadon Sancho will get another year of experience for the euro in 2021

REASONS FOR ENGLAND TO BE CHEERFUL IN 2021

]

KANE AND RASHFORD BACK

Strikers get Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford time to return from injury.

MOST ENGLAND TARGETS SINCE 2018 WORLD CUP

Harry Kane – 13

Raheem Sterling – 10

Marcus Rashford – 7

TIME FIND FORM

Raheem Sterling was one of England's foremost men, but struggled with form in the second half of the season.

The core of the line-up in England should not change much. The & # 39; three or four & # 39; Certain starters Southgate has revealed will likely remain Henderson, Harry Maguire, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.

It will be interesting to see how Kane fares during his first full season under the increasingly erratic Jose Mourinho at Spurs, but whatever happens, it would be extraordinary as one of the most gifted forwards in the world would suddenly forget how to score goals.

Outside of that quartet, opportunity is right. England needs a reliable goalkeeper, that much is certain. Hopefully that will be an improved Jordan Pickford. The Everton goalkeeper has enormous natural talent, but suffers from a loss of concentration. He is also too emotional and has to get rid of the strange idea that people want him to fail.

His place is under threat from Burnley & # 39; s Nick Pope, Aston Villas & # 39; s Tom Heaton and, arguably most seriously, Sheffield United & # 39; s Manchester United loan and Dean Henderson. Pickford has the shirt, so it's really up to him.

An injury-free season should accelerate Liverpool & # 39; s Gomez to true world class status and secure his place alongside Maguire in the middle of the defense. Either way, it would be a surprise if someone took over Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Chilwell, although Luke Shaw's return to Manchester United was interesting.

England # 1 Jordan Pickford is likely to face stiff competition to be the starter for the euro "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= England No. 1 Jordan Pickford is likely to face stiff competition to be the starter against the euro

But it is in offensive positions that in the course of what eventually passes for the next national season, can be broadened. Expect further progress from Leicester duo James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, and Phil Foden now has the extra year he needs to impress. Southgate loves him, but this summer would be too early for the Manchester City player.

Mason Greenwood at United is just a teenager, but looks like a natural goalscorer and we don't have many. He should aim high next season and Chelsea pair Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, along with Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin, will sink or swim when their club managers inevitably bring in competition for their places from overseas in the summer.

And what about Jack Grealish? If a player has ever performed as well in a struggling Premier League team as the Aston Villa midfielder, I'm struggling to remember.

It was delightful to see him and Maddison try to drag their teams to victory in the January semifinal of the Carabao Cup at Villa Park.

A move to a bigger club seems the natural next step for 24-year-old Grealish. If he stays fit and doesn't join Southgate & # 39; s team for the first time in the year, something will indeed have gone very wrong.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin excels at Everton and will believe he can make the squad in 2021 "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Dominic Calvert-Lewin excels in Everton and will believe he will make the squad in 2021

Southgate will have to make decisions with only four players who are considered certain starters "class =" blkBorder img- share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Southgate will make decisions take with only four players players considered to be certain starters

Who would have thought that the two years after the World Cup Was it so unkind to players like Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Jesse Lingard? Their lack of form in recent times has been unfathomable. I personally have not lost faith in Alli. At best, he still makes my starting XI.

Undoubtedly, one or more Southgate players will suffer the same as we emerge from the darkness of this miserable health crisis and into the light of another football season.

But, unlike many who have gone before him, Southgate has a wealth of talent at his disposal. We haven't even talked about the improvement in Marcus Rashford or the budding talent of Jadon Sancho here. There are others at risk of penetrating from the levels below. As such, I will be disappointed if he doesn't reach the threshold of next summer's European Championship with his team at a lower price than now.

40 years ago Crystal Palace’s ‘Team of the 80s’ went top for the only time in club’s history

. Their star burned only briefly but oh so brightly. Forty years ago Crystal Palace led by a charismatic young manager Terry Venables, went to the top of the league by beating Bobby Robson & # 39; s Ipswich 4-1 and was very much looked forward to by the England football team to become the eighties to knock off mighty Liverpool .

Future English international Kenny Sansom and the exciting winger Vince Hillaire, one of a new emerging generation of black footballers, came to represent all the good, brutal South London had to offer, especially after The Eagles rose to the Second Division title in May 1979 to a record audience of 51,000 people in Selhurst Park.

Almost the entire team had graduated through Palace & # 39; s famous academy system and Many had helped the club win successive FA Youth Cups – only the second team to do so since Manchester United Busby Babes in the fifties.

Forty years ago, under the leadership of young manager Terry Venables, Crystal Palace became a leading "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Forty years ago, Crystal Palace headed from the young manager Terry Venables, top of the league

That the dream turned into a nightmare so quickly – Venables, Sansom and top flight status all disappeared within two years – only adds to the emotion of the story.

] & # 39; The time to call someone Team of the Eighties was 1989, not 1979 & # 39 ;, reflects Palace captain and mid-half Jim Cannon, one of the scorers against Ipswich on September 29, 1979 and his Glasnaan tones are still undiluted many decades later. "Palace was a selling club and it's sad that we couldn't stay together any longer. But what a journey. & # 39;

Three members of the legendary Cannon team, bustling striker Dave Swindlehurst and midfield dynamics Steve Kember gathered at a pub in Croydon to remember the good times.

& # 39; I was thirty, the old man on the team & # 39 ;, jokes Kember. "Terry brought me back to the club to help the young people – in reality they helped me.

"The team spirit was something else. I remember the shock in my first week when I was told that we always went out on a Thursday night – two days before a game. I thought, "Are you crazy?"

"We met at the Woodman in Croydon and must have had about ten pints by ten o'clock. I thought it was, but no, we all went to Scarlett's nightclub. That happened everywhere. "

Cannon interrupts:" Except for the last four weeks of the promotional season. The gaffer called me in and showed me a pile of letters from people saying that we had been noticed at two in the morning. I was not completely truthful, I said the single boys were out to attract girls and the rest of us only had a few pints.

Venables was only 36 and at the beginning of a management career that would take him to England "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Venables was only 36 and at the beginning of a management career who would take him to England

& # 39; Terry looked at me, ripped open the letters and said, "just don't go out for the next four weeks of the season." And we didn't – although we didn't play very well, we did go up! & # 39;

Venables himself was 36 and was embarking on a management career that would take him to Barcelona, Tottenham and England

& # 39; He was innovative in everything he did & # 39 ;, said Swindlehurst. & # 39; We spent a lot of time devising free-kick routines. I remember a game in Plymouth, I was the only player in the box, all the other guys hung back on the edge of the box yelling I had to get out.

& # 39; It was a bluff, I started trotting back, as soon as my marker came with me, I turned around and turned to the penalty spot, where the ball came in and I could get in. & # 39;

Cannon adds: & # 39; Terry was serious about his job but also fun. We went on tour to Florida and he told us all to come with him to a local piano bar. When we got in, Terry sat on the piano herself, sang away and he was damn brilliant.

& # 39; We all looked at each other and thought, "Wow, that's our manager."

Sansom was a striking player who made his debut at the age of 16. Hillaire was another in an era when black players were subjected to barely imaginable treatment.

& # 39; There was a game at Millwall when Vince entered at half time and buried his head in his hands because of the stick he received. He told us that he was half expecting the fathers, but he got the same abuse from four-year-old children, he couldn't believe it.

(LR) Steve Kember, Jim Cannon and David Swindlehurst met for the good times "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= (LR) Steve Kember, Jim Cannon and David Swindlehurst met to remember the good times

& # 39; He learned to handle it through humor – it was the only way back then. In Portsmouth, this guy yelled, "You black bastard" to Vince and he turned around and said, "This is not what your wife said last night." The fans laughed at the man who started it. & # 39;

All the hard work of Palace in 1978/79 came down to the last game at home against Burnley on a Friday night; May 11 – the day before the FA Cup final.

Win and Palace were champions, draw and they would be promoted, but in second place behind their dreaded rivals Brighton would lose and miss everything. The turnout of 51,462 remains the highest in the club's history.

"We hit Burnley, hit the bar, but didn't score," Swindlehurst said. "We feared the worst until 76 minutes when Walshy (Ian Walsh) got a header on Vince's crotch he was not entitled to.

"I then scored a second. I picked up the ball halfway through, rode a few challenges and was so tired that I couldn't run anymore. I just hit it and it went in. The explosion of noise, of relief, and much more still sent chills.

Palace's long lap of honor and celebrations with supporters had one drawback. & # 39; When we got to the lounges after that, they ran out of booze & # 39 ;, Kember remembers.

Palace had moved to the top of the league after beating Bobby Robson's Ipswich 4-1 "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= ] Palace had moved to the top of the league after defeating Bobby Robson & # 39; s Ipswich 4-1

Cannon went to an Indian restaurant in Thornton Heath, but the players met & # 39 in the afternoon during the legendary Woodman to toast their promotion and watch the last cup in which Arsenal defeated Manchester United 3-2.

Nothing that seemed to stop Palace from skyrocketing and they received major national publicity more than a decade later, similar to Kevin Keegan & # 39; s Newcastle.

The First Division was seriously strong in 1979/80. Liverpool had one of the best teams in their illustrious history with Kenny Dalglish in the foreground. Brian Clough & # 39; s Nottingham Forest were European cup winners, Arsenal was in the middle of a series of three consecutive FA Cup finals and Robson & # 39; s Ipswich and Aston Villa built excellent teams that would win and bring in trophies.

Unfussed, the new Boys of Palace remained unbeaten in their first nine games. In the eighth of them, against Ipswich, they were just pulsating; Swindlehurst, John Hinshelwood, Gerry Francis and Cannon all scored to leave the country, speculating about how far they would go in the next new decade.

Unfortunately that was good, and the survivors have a strong sense of why. & # 39; We played Liverpool a few months later and I think Bob Paisley put all the newspaper hype on Anfield's board. They beat us 3-0, & # 39; said Swindlehurst.

Venables & # 39; decision to replace hard-working Kember with the more talented but less defensive-minded Francis in midfield also led to a dressing room crack.

The trio reminisced in Croydon of memories made while representing the London side "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= The trio recalled memories in Croydon while representing the London side

& # 39; I spoke to a man in the player bar after a game and said none of us could understand why Stevie wasn't playing. That was all it took, the story hit the papers, I owned it, and Terry dropped me. I was loaned out to Derby and eventually signed for them & # 39 ;, Swindlehurst reveals.

& # 39; That was the thing about Terry Venables', Cannon added. "If you had the wrong side of him, he would throw you away quickly."

Palace won only one of their last 10 games in 1979/80 and slipped to 13th place in the final table. If that was modest for a team to dominate the new decade, things would get worse quickly.

The plans for the next season were shaken when Sansom was allowed to join Arsenal in a shock exchange deal with young striker Clive Allen, who had only been in Highbury for 62 days.

& # 39; I've held corporate events at Palace with Kenny over the years, he always told me he never wanted to leave Palace. “We were an emerging team,” says Cannon.

"He said Venners called him at the office and told him to pack his things, he was going to Arsenal. Kenny said he was so upset at the time.

Palace never recovered from the loss of their talisman. In October 1980 they were at the bottom of the table and Cannon was surprised when he was approached by Venables at the team hotel the night before an away game in Sunderland.

& # 39; He took me aside and just came out with it: How do you think the boys will feel when I leave? & # 39; I thought he was smiling, but no. He told me that he had heard from sources that Howard Kendall had already been interviewed for his work. & # 39;

Venables went fine, but it was Ernie Walley and then Malcolm Allison who came in, not Kendall. Palace was demoted and the best players left, including their good midfielder Peter Nicholas to Arsenal. The talented Hillaire, whose pace and dribble was reminiscent of Raheem Sterling, never physically strengthened like the Manchester City player has done and didn't have the expected career. The same can be said for the entire team.

Clive Allen, who later played for Tottenham, joined Palace for an exchange deal from Arsenal "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Clive Allen, who later played for Tottenham had switched Palace's deal from Arsenal

& # 39; You can't take those moments away from winning promotion and then get to the top of the league & # 39; said Kember. & # 39; But Palace had a reputation for not building on their success. It was that team, it should have lasted 10 or 15 years.

"It could be the creation of Crystal Palace. They could have settled in the Eerste Divisie and built a new stadium. "

That's about self-pity. The three comrades laugh much longer at the good times.

& # 39; Remember Budgie? (goalkeeper John Burridge). He was crazy, & # 39; says Swindlehurst.

& # 39; Budgie was known for doing all of this gymnastics during his warm-up. We went to Sunderland on a frozen field and Terry told him not to, but the fans all yelled, "Come on, do the back flip." So he did and eventually he put his shoulder in it. We played the entire game with a one-armed goalkeeper. He tried to hit everything with his left hand and missed.

Kember does not escape the locker room reunion. & # 39; Remember when you got kicked in the b *** s in Leicester. You entered halfway through, they were so (hands outstretched).

& # 39; Typical Steve, he came over and said: & # 39; Here Swinds, look here! & # 39;

The trio burst out laughing again. They may not actually have become the team of the 1980s, but memories of the journey are priceless.

SIR CLIVE WOODWARD: It’s game over, so now’s the time to give rugby a reboot

The decision to delay the curtain of Premiership rugby for five weeks and delay European competitions only leads to an inevitable shutdown.

And I don't feel like trying to save the Six Nations.

Yes, there will be financial costs, but that should not be a factor – and I'm assuming some sort of an event insurance has been taken out.

It was a bad decision to organize the English Six Nations clash with Wales at Twickenham last week "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= It was a bad decision to host the English Six Nations clash with Wales last week in Twickenham

Rugby – and other sports that cancel – may have to do their best, but they have undoubtedly done the right thing and I'm sure sufficient account will be taken of this.

These are extraordinary times and it is clear that live professional sports will not return anytime soon. If so, we need a fresh start.

While accepting difficult times, I was a little disappointed with how the Six Nations responded to the coronavirus threat.

We've screamed for decisive and early calls, some leadership. Unfortunately, no one stepped into that vacuum. You expected World Rugby to be on top of everything, but they have no real jurisdiction over the Six Nations, a huge weakness in rugby governance.

Premiership Rugby agreed to suspend the competition until the weekend of April 24-26 "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </div>
<p> <noscript> <img id= Premiership Rugby has agreed to suspend the competition until it weekend of April 24-26

The writing was on the wall on February 26 when Ireland's game against Italy was called off. Once it became clear how serious it was in Italy, all bets were not valid. I was very uncomfortable – and wrote in that sense – about the staging of the England vs Wales game last week at Twickenham.

Sometimes you just have to step back and get some perspective. What we found important one morning was irrelevant the next.

It's all over: the 2020 Six Nations, the Gallagher Premiership, the Pro 14, the Top 14 and the two European leagues.

There is no mileage to hit our heads against a brick wall here. It will make life much easier in the future if we stop this season altogether. We must now focus on 2020-21.

Some hold on to the remaining Six Nations games to be played in October, but can we be sure that this is even logistically possible? No one can guarantee that. And even if they could, competition would be skewed.

The Rugby Football Union suspended all levels of the game in England until April 14, "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> <noscript> [1945900021] ] The Rugby Football Union suspended all levels of the game in England until April 14th "class =" blkBorder img-share "/> </noscript> </div>
<p class= The Rugby Football Union suspended all levels of the game in England until April 14

When we had foot-and-mouth disease in 2001, the scenario was simple. Could England win their rescheduled match in Dublin to win the Grand Slam? Now, there are still three teams that are very much in the title fight, but Ireland has two games to play, while England and France have only one. It just doesn't feel right.

It was bad enough in 2001 when we felt a little deceived at the camp in England playing just one game for the three in Ireland, but it's even messier this time.

As we enter this rugby-free period, I wonder if there could be an unexpected benefit in the long run.

Rugby has been far too grumpy, shocking and confused lately. The feel-good factor of the World Cup has disappeared. It had become a worrying time even before the emergence of the coronavirus.

The game that I knew as a player and coach for more than half a century threatens to lose his soul a bit.

The salary ceiling has always been intrinsically unworkable and unfair for large clubs that feed the English team. It must be changed or demolished, while the role of venture capitalists like CVC must be clearly defined and controlled. Rugby should be in charge of the game and shaping it, not them.
