St Helens 4-18 Warrington: Wolves complete shock Challenge Cup victory as underdogs roll over favorites
- Joe Philbin, Ben Murdoch-Masila and Daryl Clark all found the try line for Wolves
- Steve Price's side were underdogs before kickoff, but made for a clinical display
- Theo Fages attempted a comeback in the second half, but it didn't work was not enough
- Warrington raised the Challenge Cup 12 months after losing the final to Catalan
- Favorites St Helens were hoping for a first challenge Cup triumph since 2008
Prince Harry turned down a weekend with the rest of the family in Balmoral to be in Wembley.
He must feel that it was an informed decision after Warrington Wolves showed a show suitable for a king, let alone a prince, to stun favorites St Helens in a pulsating collision.
Led by the magnificent Stefan Ratchford, and in the absence of injured playmaker Blake Austin, the Wire caused one of the biggest shocks in the history of this grand old tournament.
St Helens is widely regarded as the best team in the country, and for good reason. They are 16 points clear at the top of the Super League.
Warrington had lost their last five games and it seemed as if they had no idea where their next victory would come from. They know now.
Somehow, the underdogs took everything the saints, who rightly were injured with referee Robert Hicks, threw at them.
Somehow they got their noses in front and protected that leadership as if their lives depended on it.
After going up 12-0, they were under enormous pressure. And when the gap was narrowed to eight, they could have collapsed. They did not. With eight minutes remaining of the match, Daryl Clark forced his way through and their dream came true.
Warrington & # 39; s sympathetic Australian coach Steve Price, whose side was upset by Catalans Dragons last year, said & # 39; This is a better feeling, isn't it? It was very hollow last year.
& # 39; I & # 39; I'm just really happy for the players – they worked their way up from the back. It had to take a special performance and I have a special group. & # 39;
The game might have taken a different course if Saints had been attempted when Morgan Knowles set a Theo Fages kick three minutes into the game.
For reasons known only to him, Hicks excluded it and didn't even send it to the video room. Saints boss Justin Holbrook, who said the better team won, called it & # 39; unforgivable & # 39 ;.
Warrington Wolves: Ratchford, Lineham, Goodwin, King, Charnley, Currie, Patton, Hill, Clark, Cooper, Murdoch- Masila, Hughes, Clark Interchange: Akauola, Philbin, Davis, Mamo Head Coach: Steve Price
Referee: Robert Hicks (Oldham)
& # 39; It is the last Challenge Cup & # 39 ;, he said. & # 39; You would be nasty if it happened in a Super League game and they didn't check it. It's huge – you get your nose on a hot day. This may sound like sour grapes, but I can't get around it. It is awful. & # 39;
Desperate defense kept the game scoreless until quick-thinking Joe Philbin discovered a hole and was over.
Saints defender Lachlan Coote, who was having a nightmare, dropped a Ratchford bomb and Ben Murdoch-Masila passed from the set of six.
With the arrival of half time, Warrington managed to hold out and Ratchford celebrated.
Another game changer came when a flying Bryson Goodwin denied a Tommy Makinson trademark dive. After a violent pressure wave, Fages finally broke through the tiresome primula-and-blue wall. But Coote unforgivably couldn't add the extras, and Clark took care of it.
Prince Harry found a chair in the shade on a burning day, not for fair skinned people.
The spotlight, however, belonged to Warrington.

Warrington Wolves center Anthony Gelling arrested on suspicion of intentional injury as a Super League club suspending him pending an investigation into his behavior
- Anthony Gelling has been suspended by the Super League side Warrington Wolves
- Gelling made the move to Warrington this season and has played twice
- An investigation must be conducted by the club while Gelling is suspended
A rugby league star has been arrested on suspicion of injured intentionally and suspended by his club.
Warrington Wolves center Anthony Gelling was detained by officers who were summoned to report an attack on an address in Widnes on Saturday.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of intentional injury, interrogated and released on conditional bail with a police investigation underway.
Cook Islands international Gelling, 29, played for Wigan Warriors from 2012-17.
The Auckland-born back, who can also play in the second row, had a brief period with New Zealand Warriors in the NRL of Australia before returning to the UK to play for Widnes Vikings last year.
He was signed by Warrington for a two-year deal in September and played this season in both parties so far – a small defeat at Wigan and a stunning home win at St. Helens.
Warrington has launched their own probe and he will not be allowed to play until it is finished.
Gelling's arrest still stems from the controversial decision of Catalans Dragons to sign Israel Folau. The former Wallabies star, fired after controversially posting a homophobic message on social media, could make his French debut this weekend.
His arrival has caused indignation about the game and beyond with rules that have now been changed in an effort to prevent further, equally controversial signings.
Earlier on Wednesday, Warrington issued a statement that made no reference to the police probe.
A spokesperson said: & # 39; Warrington Wolves can confirm that center Anthony Gelling will not be available for selection pending a club search for behavior outside the club. Gelling fully supports the research. The club and player will not make any further comments at this time. & # 39;
Wigan Warriors 16-10 Warrington Wolves: hosts take advantage of Chris Hill's early red card to win bruises Super League opener
- Warrington led Thursday through 8-0 via Ben Murdoch of Tonga – Masila
- The Super League opener, however, turned away from an incident in the 23rd minute
- Chris Hill was shown in red for visitors after he crashed into the head of Sam Powell
- Powell stood motionless on the grass as a penalty and a red card was then given
- Wigan then took advantage of the red in the bruises Super League opener
Chris Hill got a red card and Sam Powell became red picked up on a stretcher when Wigan won a bruising opener for the Super League campaign.
Warrington continued 8-0 – Ben Murdoch-Masila of Tonga scored the first attempt of the season – but the game depended on the incident in the 23rd minute.
Powell was about to come down when Hill bumped his head, leaving the 27-year-old scrum-half immobile on the grass when the TV referee made the verdict of a penalty attempt and a red one Map. Powell did not succeed in his assessment of the head injury, but was good enough to view the second half from the couch.
The first half continued in the same ferocious spirit and more controversy could come on Friday after Blake Austin Wigan & Morgan accused Morgan Smithies of gushing his eye.
Wigan was midway through 12-10 thanks to the penalty attempt and an earlier piece of magic by Bevan Frans, seemingly to pass and then to push through.
Warrington stopped despite the fact that he had been reduced to 12 men, but they were back to 11 after an hour when Frans was eliminated by Mike Cooper while walking down his own stairs.
Wigan received a second penalty attempt but Cooper was sent to the sin-bin. Shortly thereafter, Liam Marshall went into the corner to give Wigan breathing room and they survived a great late push from the 11 men of Warrington.
& # 39; There was absolutely no way I didn't fight & # 39 ;: Carl Frampton shakes the broken hand to defeat the American Tyler McCreary in the first fight since Josh lost the Warrington and shot the lightweight world title van Jamel Herring
Against an undefeated opponent in Las Vegas Frampton achieved a 100-88 win over the scorecards of all three judges before he revealed and had worked carefully to prevent him from seriously holding his weak hand. injured, which again became difficult in the second round of the fight.
The 32-year-old now focuses on the Super Featherweight Belt, which had previously held the IBF Super-Bantamweight and WBA (Super) Featherweight Titles.
Speaking with ESPN in the Northern Irish shirt after recording a comeback victory after his IBF world featherweight title challenge Josh Warrington's defeat in England last December, Frampton said: “My hand wasn't great at the camp.
& # 39; I feel like I hurt it again in the second round, so it wasn't the most exciting fight.
I broke it twice in the camp and I knew that many people came out to support me.
& # 39; There was absolutely no way I didn't fight, so I did 26, 28 rounds because of the hand. But I had to fight. & # 39;
The Jackal sent McCreary to the Canvas Twice, Capital refers to his tactic to focus on body shots to rock his opponent in the sixth and ninth round.
He was put in the ring for his interview after the fight by Jamel Herring, the WBO junior lightweight champion he could
Frampton added that he would like to challenge him in Belfast or New York against Herring, who has won 21 of his 23 fights.
Josh Warrington is on his way to Ricky Hatton & glory after retaining world title
- Josh Warrington produced explosive performance to defend his IBF title
- ] Warrington got the best from Sofiane Takoucht and deserves much praise
- The Yorkshire Warrior deserves to be embraced by the public as Ricky Hatton was
- Warrington is set to take on Chinese sensation Xu Can in his next fight
Josh Warrington is for Manchester what Ricky Hatton was for Manchester for the widest audience at to embrace the best featherweight on Planet Boxing as they did the Hitman.
The Yorkshire Warrior produced one of the most explosive performances of a British boxer in recent times to preserve his world title on Saturday night.
The hometown of Warrington was in ecstasy when he destroyed the French challenger for his world title in two super-loaded rounds.
Monsieur Sofiane Takoucht went down swinging but now there is only one Josh Warrington.
& # 39; I love Ricky Hatton, & # 39; said the man of his moment in his jubilant dressing room in the First Direct Arena.
& # 39; An inspiration to me and so exciting that he had that huge following that spread from Manchester.
& # 39; Maybe that can happen for me. Would be nice. & # 39;
Whether he, like Hatton, will one day be followed by 30,000 fanatic believers in Las Vegas, will probably depend on the fact that he finds an opponent as large as Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.
Meanwhile, promoter Frank Warren, who also glorified Hatton, reaches out to bearers of other alphabets for Warrington to add his IBF title.
The first is probably the Chinese sensation Xu Can, the WBA regular champion, at the Elland Road home of Warrington & # 39; s beloved Leeds United
Xu defends that title against Manny Robles following month but Warren says: We are already in discussion with him and assuming he wins, we can fill the football field here in May. & # 39;
Apart from that US Olympian Shakur Stevenson, who is bidding on the vacant WBO title on Saturday week, he says he will only stay at featherweight & # 39; if I get a unification fight with Josh. & # 39;
Switching to super featherweight is also an option for Warrington now that Leo Santa Cruz, who had two epic battles with Carl Frampton, did the same.
Warrington has been itching to get his fists on rival champions – & I will fight anyone with a belt & # 39; – but the hell he inflicts on Takouche can discourage even the best of them from sharing a ring with him.
He came to the ring through the shrill sounds of a military pipe and drum band and was a deadly weapon from the first bell.
It is too simplistic to reject Takouche as a pushover. This was a former European champion in a series of 15 wins, but he was blown away by an exciting storm of punches.
The Frenchman came to the Warrington locker room to tell him: & Yes, you really are the best featherweight in the world. & # 39; Warren goes further and says: & # 39; Josh can become one of the greatest of all British hunters. & # 39; Bigger than Hatton?
& # 39; Listen & # 39 ;, says Warren. & # 39; I also love Ricky. We had magical times together and he was a great fighter. But he went on enjoying the fighting. With Josh we have the same excitement, but in a fully committed boxer. & # 39;
To which Warrington Chuckles says: & # 39; If we did our thing a few times and then went on a trip to Vegas, I can party like Ricky. & # 39;
Now that he has learned his lesson by cutting a few turns in preparation for that ugly fight with Kid Galahad, there seems to be no limit to what he could achieve.
Can Xu do something to derail this express train to greatness? No, Xu can't. But it will be nice to find out in Leeds. And it's time for Britain to come aboard.
Josh Warrington destroys Sofiane Takoucht in two rounds to maintain IBF featherweight title for the third time
- Josh Warrington did not take prisoners with his efforts against Sofiane Takoucht
- It took Warrington just two rounds to push the Frenchman aside with a TKO
- Vocal Leeds supported their hero who immediately smelled blood
- Warrington admitted that his victory came as a result of working on southpaw style
Josh Warrington has electrified Leeds and sent a warning to his rival world champion featherweight champions with a hurricane of a performance on a cold Leeds night.
Sofiane Takoucht, the French challenger for his IBF world title, was struck by a relentless sequence of lightning bolts.
It was all over with eight seconds of the second round left.
Takoucht was bent over twice in that beautiful stanza and although he kept swinging he needed the intercession of referee Bob Williams to save him serious damage.
This was the performance Warrington needed to demand that Leo try to refute Santa, claiming that I am the best featherweight in the world. & # 39; The Warringtoneers were in force.
The First Direct Arena was teeming with expectation and their husband had promised to be back at its best after the unrestrained effort and marginal victory in that fight with Kid Galahad.
The question the believers had to answer was Warrington more motivated against a French challenger few would have heard of before.
Warrington admitted that he devoted less than all his attention to his preparations for Galahad and vowed not to shift the standards that had brought him to the world title winning victory over Lee. Selby and a brilliant defense against Carl Frampton.
He also knew that in order to break out of the local fungus, he needed a striking performance against Takoucht.
Promoter Frank Warren had warned that his rival world champions in his division would continue to avoid him unless he forced he to get public attention on them.
Warrington & # 39; s access to the ring was announced by a military pipe and drum band.
He immediately took the order, landing nicely on the body and head of the taller Frenchman from the opening bell.
This was more like the ruthless, all the action that Warrington loves – and Takoucht quickly learned to hate.
Josh Warrington makes the third defense of his IBF featherweight title on Saturday when he takes on France & # 39; Sofiane Takoucht in Leeds.
The 28-year-old & # 39; Leeds Warrior & # 39; had to become slender to under 9th and he invited Sportsmail to his debilitating 12-week camp while fighting against shed weight …
12 WEEKS FOR THE FIGHT
Weight : 10th 4 pounds (18 pounds to lose)
I am usually very greedy between fights. I love fry-up: fish and chips; Sunday dinners and ice cream. I love Ben and Jerry & # 39; s caramel – good stuff!
A few weeks ago I was at a wedding and people were drinking outside. I never thought a pint could look so good!
I started camping for the Lee Selby and Carl Frampton fights around the 10th 7lb but once I started training this time, after about a week or so I was back in the neighborhood 10th so there was just one little fat puppy!
I am always excited to start the camp because after two or three weeks out of the gym you have had time to recharge mentally as well as physically. Even after toe to toe with Carl Frampton over 12 laps I felt good after five days.
It is more mental because you know you once started camping until the fight. You have to give 100 percent every day, you have to prepare for those sacrifices and you know you are going to put your body through a debilitating regime every day.
The first four weeks are about getting my fitness, strength and conditioning records at a high level. We then work on game plans and review for the next two weeks. Then the last six weeks are more or less focused on sparring. Normally we will complete 120 laps in a camp.
The training weeks begin to decline and the last few weeks are when you want to get in shape
TWO WEEKS FOR THE FIGHT
Weight: 9th 12 pounds (12 pounds to lose )
I'm getting tired now. We do two sparring sessions a week to make the equivalent of two full fights, the endurance circuits have been stepped up and the runs are faster and more intense. I start to look tight, my waist is starting to slim down, my legs feel lean. I can certainly see more muscles.
My abs look absolutely torn but on certain days you see the veins in my body because the fat comes to a minimum.
Two weeks to go, my diet is a lot tighter. I don't go into the cupboards to nibble a little chocolate. I eat four meals a day, but around this time you begin to long for the feeling of being more than anything full.
This is when you start driving past takeaway restaurants and the coolest looks really attractive. I am very lucky that my wife is my personal chef, so she will always spice it up if she can.
As soon as I enter the camp, all the sweet stuff is hit on my head. I am banned from going to the supermarket because it is only torture. If you suddenly walk along the aisle of dessert, it seems to me the tastiest in the world.
I had my first weighting and I am around 9 pounds 12, which seems heavy, but because my daughters have been poor, I wanted to stay heavier, so I am not susceptible to colds, coughs, flu, viruses .
If you lose weight, your immune system weakens.
The last few weeks of the camp the weight starts to decrease, so we don't do the many training sessions because you don't have much energy. You can get sports massages, days off, cryotherapy, but the body has been training for weeks and just tears away. You have to force yourself to get up, go to the gym and give it 100 percent. This is where your mentality really comes in.
ONE WEEK TO THE FIGHT
Weight: 9th 8 pounds (8 pounds to lose)
Training is minimal and you & # 39; am only really eating to make ends meet. I don't die of myself and I don't skip meals; that's a huge no-no. Your body will go into shock and stop burning because it thinks it will not get any food.
Family or friends think I might be offended if they eat a Sunday roast or a McDonald's, but it really doesn't bother me
You just miss being satisfied, feeling of & # 39; that hit the spot & # 39 ;.
I have a final check-in. I can't be more than 9th 3 pounds, so I'm losing 2 pounds today, 2 pounds tomorrow and maybe a walk on Wednesday and I've reached the limit.
I have always managed my weight well. But in 2015 I woke up on the day of the weighting for my fight with Dennis Tubieron and I was around 9 pounds 6. I went for a walk with a sweater on and only lost 1 pound. A small run in sweat suit took another pound off. Some hunters go into saunas with sweat, but I sat in a red-hot bath up to my neck for about an hour and a half. That is the hardest thing I have had to do to arrive.
The pressure of the fight comes, fatigue begins to increase and you lose weight quickly.
I am normally relaxed, but if someone cuts me to pieces while driving, I am tough! You look at other people, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, and get inspiration from them. He is well into his thirties and he keeps shining because he is an athlete leading life.
The entire training that we do is for that one night. Weeks of grafting, hours in the gym, thousands of punches, kilometers of running all amount to 36 minutes.
Over the years I have had difficult times when I had finished working, had to go to the gym and I was just so hungry. But I have to do things well, realize that it will not last long and never think about the fish and chips, kebabs and fry-ups that I will eat afterwards!
Weight: 9th 3 pounds (3 pounds to be lost)
The last few hours have been the most difficult because the pressure of the fight is increasing. The night before the weighting, I go to bed around 9 pounds £ 5, wake up around 9 pounds 3 pounds and by the time I go to the toilet, I'm around 9 pounds £ 2.5. Then normally 20 minutes in a red-hot bath is enough. It's just about shutting off water.
You feel weak, but I try to introduce myself in the bath and my opponent in the room. I don't want him to see me struggle, so I understand moans.
I always come under 9 in case the scales are not as accurate as mine. Once I have arrived, rehydration is a steady process. Once, years ago, I was too much and I got sick.
Now I don't put that in too much, too fast. If you have surplus food lying around your belly when you make bodyshots, this is not a good feeling.
I made myself sick by eating a load of nonsense even after the fight.
Normally I put around 10 pounds after weighing. Around 9/9 pounds is where I'm at my optimum and that's where I'll probably be for the first bell.

& # 39; It & # 39; sa joke & # 39 ;: Josh Warrington is furious Kid Galahad got an eliminator chance and another shot at IBF belt
- Josh Warrington won a limited decision against Kid Galahad in June
- Galahad gets another shot at the IBF belt if he can win an eliminator
- It will give Warrington the pleasure as he has to box the Sheffield Kid, October 11, 2019 |
Josh Warrington is more angry with his last fight than with the Frenchman he is against world featherweight title defends in Leeds this Saturday night.
Only in June did Warrington get a narrow split decision against Kid Galahad, who will get another chance on the IBF belt if he can win the final eliminator Galahad v Claudia Carrero goes wallet bids next week, just five days after the collision of Warrington with the undefeated Sofiane Takoucht.
If Galahad triumphs the way he should do against Carrero, probably in December, it will give Warrington no pleasure at all if he has to box the Sheffield Kid again in a mandatory defense early next year.Only this June, Warrington got a narrow split decision against Kid Galahad
& # 39; It's a joke & # 39 ;, says Warrington. & # 39; How can he fight an eliminator again so soon after I beat him and he dropped to the eighth (actually seventh) in the world ranking? & # 39; The answer is that the IBF is giving Galahad a second chance because of the controversy surrounding the verdict at the end of their first encounter. That fight was more like a wrestling match, but most observers – with the exception of two of the three jury members – believed that Warrington had lost a hard-won title against Lee Selby and defended brilliantly against Carl Frampton.
& # 39; I suppose he has complained, & # 39; says Warrington. & # 39; But as far as I'm concerned, I've cleaned up the domestic scene. & # 39; But he knows that he is mainly to blame for himself, that he admits that the summer fight with Galahad is a & # 39; disappointing cuddle competition & # 39; and that & # 39; although I did not overlook him, there were some things that I had not taken into account during my training & # 39 ;. We all live and learn. Warrington maintains that this time he has left nothing to chance, even though Takoucht is not well known outside of France despite his number 4 in the world.
He shouldn't do that either, because nothing less than a performance of considerably higher tension in the First Direct Arena can light the path to large-scale title unification fights that he craves.
& # 39; Hereafter, & # 39; he says, & i only want meaningful fights against the other star names in the division. & # 39; Promoter Frank Warren is pleased that the man he describes as & # 39; the best featherweight on Earth & # 39; wants to make a statement against Takoucht.
Warren says: & Josh can become one of the best fighters of his generation, which is probably the reason that the other title holders Leo Santa Cruz and Oscar Valdez do not want to fight him. To help, he has to get past Takoucht in style. & # 39; Warrington says: & # 39; Don't worry. I want to switch it off early. & # 39; * Warrington v Takoucht will be broadcast live on BT Sport on Saturday evening.Galahad gets another shot at the IBF belt belt if he can win the last eliminator
